Upgrade an Older Access Control System in Austin: What Can Stay?
An older access control system can still operate the doors while making routine changes difficult. One school we evaluated had to use an on-site computer to manage users and schedules, and sharing administrator access was cumbersome. That is a practical reason to consider an upgrade.
What can you keep?
Existing strikes, electrified exit devices, door contacts, wiring and some readers may be reusable after a door-by-door inspection. Compatibility is never automatic: the new controller, reader protocol, power supply, lock current and existing cable all need to be checked. Worn or poorly matched hardware should be corrected as part of the design.
What changes with cloud management?
Authorized administrators can manage credentials, groups and schedules remotely, with permissions limited by role. We plan for door event history, forced-door and door-prop alerts, and a clear process for removing access when staff leave. Cloud platforms such as Brivo require an ongoing subscription; its scope and pricing should be included in the proposal.
How we plan a migration
- Inventory each controlled door, reader, lock, power supply and network connection.
- Decide what can safely remain and what must be replaced.
- Test door operation, free egress, mechanical access, alarms and credentials before handoff.
- Train administrators and document the finished system.
