School access control has to coordinate outside entry with the way students and staff exit. A motorized or electrified exit device can be part of the design, but suitability depends on the complete door assembly, rating, traffic, hardware listing and approved emergency plan.

Start with the existing opening

Inspect the frame, hinges, closer, latch, panic or fire-exit hardware and power-transfer path. A poorly aligned door will not reliably latch just because a motorized kit is added. On a rated door, use compatible listed components and follow the approved hardware schedule.

Keep egress and accessibility in the design

Confirm how an occupant operates the door from inside during ordinary use, a power failure and an emergency. Check the applicable accessibility requirements for operable hardware, reach range and opening force along with the adopted building and fire rules. A product label alone does not establish that the installed door meets ADA or egress requirements.

Plan controlled entry and lockdown

Depending on the approved door design, exterior credentials, schedules and an authorized lockdown command can change entry permissions while preserving required interior egress. Identify which doors respond, who can initiate the action, how first responders enter and how the system returns to normal. Test the complete sequence with the school and reviewing authorities.

Monitor the door itself

  • Use a door-position switch to distinguish a closed door from a door held open.
  • Configure forced-door and door-prop notifications with practical delays.
  • Record credential and administrator actions in an audit trail.
  • Test network loss, power loss and any approved fire-alarm interface.
